Home costs vary around the country, and estimating what your new home will cost has probably already caused you some confusion and frustration. Standard cost estimating procedures are difficult to pin down and then, they are often inaccurate. This is partially because there are so many different materials that go into a new home and the price range of finish materials is often wide.
There is no way to know exactly what your home will cost until it's designed, finish materials are chosen and plans are put out to bid. Local building costs affect your overall costs too and they vary from place to place.
Designing a home for a budget is both a science and an art and doing it well requires experience and attention.
We have developed a way to estimate the cost of your new home more accurately before it's even designed, with our Cost Estimate Worksheet. The worksheet is explained in detail in our Price section.
To help you compare prices, our homes typically cost just slightly more than traditional custom homes with similar-grade finishes in any given area of the country. You're not going to pay less for a Sunlight home, but the quality of the design, materials and the energy efficiency will make your Sunlight home a better investment. Your Sunlight home will end up costing much less in the long run when you include both initial cost and operating costs compared to that of a conventional home. Our Price section has general price ranges for our Component Package and estimated total, turn-key costs of our homes.

Sunlight homes can be designed to be zero energy, using no additional power other than what the home generates itself with photovoltaic (PV) systems that produce electricity. Climate affects the design of a zero energy home and in more severe climates, material and equipment costs are higher. We discuss these options with our clients on an individual basis to come up with the best plan for their situation. We design every Sunlight home to use as little extra energy as possible.
We specialize in designing smaller homes. Smaller homes use fewer materials, take up less space and use less energy. They require less maintenance and they cost less overall. With a smart design, most people can actually have a smaller home than they first thought.
Families, people who work at home and people with hobbies that have space requirements need more room than singles or couples. No matter the size, by carefully eliminating wasted space, we can reduce the size of our homes without compromising livability. The additional cost of a super insulated structure can be offset by the savings realized in a smaller home! A well insulated, smaller, energy efficient home is a good, long-term investment. And it's the right thing to do for our planet.
